Summer Roofing Repairs
When it comes to our roofs, we pay them more attention when severe weather starts to hit. Checking for leaks, or noticing there’s an issue when you see a damp patch on the ceiling of an upstairs room. But how often do we consider checking over our roof in the summer?
Summer Roof Checks
The summer offers a nice time to give your roof a good thorough check over, whether you do this yourself, or call in the professionals. This time of year reduces the risk of adverse weather, like heavy rains and wind, making it somewhat safer to climb that ladder. It also means that you can get a clear view in good quality light, allowing you to see more imperfections.
What To Look Out For
If you are intending on doing your roof checks yourself, there are a number of things that you can look out for.
Moss – When you can see moss on your roof, this can be a sign of cracks and gaps amongst your tiles. These cracks can be aggravated by the growth of moss and become worse over time. While you might not be too concerned about frost in the summer, these cracks can hold water, which expands in the frost to force the crack further. It is worth getting this checked in summer, to make it a smaller job before the winter.
Visible cracks – some cracks are visible from the ground, others are only seen when you are at the top of a ladder, as with the moss, it is ideal to get these addressed before the winter hits to avoid further damage.
Damage – Damage to your roof can be caused by a number of factors, from mother nature beating down with rain, snow and wind, to birds and other wildlife using your roof as a personal playground and nesting place. Significant amounts of damage can be missed if you only inspect from the ground. This includes tiles that have been moved or even damage to fascias and soffits that allow creatures under your roof tiles.
Loft light – head into your loft space on a bright day and look out for sources of light. Ensuring that your loft is as dark as possible will allow you to see any sources of light no matter how small. Pinpointing these inside allows you to know where to check on your roof. This can be something as small as a slipped tile, a missing tile or could be a sign of cracks in tiles, or bowing of beams that have changed how all of your tiles now sit.
